GENERAL RULES

Along with general livestock rules, the following rules apply to goat.

  1. Market goats must be born on or after January 1, 2023.

  2. Market goats must be owned by exhibitors by May 1, 2023.

  3. Market goats must weigh between 55 and 110 pounds. Any market goat weighing less than 55 pounds or more than 110 pounds will not be eligible for Grand or Reserve. In addition, market goats weighing over 110 pounds will have a selling weight of 110 pounds.

  4. They will be assigned to these weight divisions by a special committee after weigh in. This committee includes representatives from the Vo-Ag Department, WVU Cooperative Extension Service, Wirt County Youth Livestock Association and the Wirt County Fair Association

  5. Market goats can be wethers or does. Must be a meat breed such as a Boer, Boer Cross, Spanish, Tennessee Meat Goat, etc. Weathers must be castrated and dehorned shortly after birth and completely healed by fair time. Animals determined as not meeting these standards are ineligible for exhibition, competition, and the livestock sale.

  7. NO OPEN CLASSES FOR 2023. Any open division goat must have an honor herd inspection prior to the Wirt County Fair in order to be eligible to participate in open classes. Herd inspections must be performed by a State Animal Health Inspector or a Veterinarian.

  8. NO ANIMALS MAY ENTER THE BARN BEFORE THE DESIGNATED WEIGH IN TIME.
